You may have a gruesome situation of job loss or a loss of a dear one or loss of health or going through a broken marriage. You also might be thinking of quitting as your long suffering is rigidly tested and defiled your joyful spirit. Don't you have the right to grumble? How does this verse appear to you when everything is nothing but negative in your life?
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thess 5:16-18)
Paul had all the rights to fret about the circumstances he has going through. He was often beaten, separated, humiliated, thrown into prison, mostly awaiting for execution in the Roman prison. But instead of fretting, his lips (and heart) were singing the words of praise and thanksgiving.
Is it radical to give thanks no matter what? The answer is yes. It is crucial to understand the power of God and what He does during one of us is going through suffering. Have a deep dive into the below verses.
- No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it (1 Cor 10:13).
- Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7)
2 Thankfulness is often an undervalued virtue and not very much cultivated in our daily lives. Only one, out of the 10 lepers came back to Jesus with gratitude. I have to admit, most of the time this was the pattern of my personal prayers too. Later I experienced the pinches an ungrateful heart leads to and the joy and freedom that thankfulness offers.
Being thankful to God is not one of the 10 commandments, God does not need glory as He is all glorious, but it is a requisition for us fragile human beings to stay contented and guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. It's a discipline to accelerate our faith in our Creator and a sign of spiritual maturity.
Let me conclude with a piece of wisdom I heard in one the Christian movies and one of my favorite Bible verse- " Lest not forget affliction during prosperity and prosperity during affliction, and be thankful in both circumstances."
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever (Psalm 107:1).

Thank you Jesus for leading us in victory irrespective of our circumstances
